Over the last 10 years, I have followed the lives of many people who have put themselves on various social media platforms and have made careers out of it. I have followed YouTubers, bloggers, you name it and I've probably followed them! Although I don't follow all of the same people as I used to for various reasons, I have always found a decent group of people to engage with online. While the common term to refer to these people is ‘influencer,’ I have found that this word has earned itself a negative connotation. The term ‘influencer’ has become the word that the mainstream media uses to reference individuals who make questionable decisions that create a buzz and conversation among those who don’t subscribe to this kind of entertainment. However, the purpose of this post is to celebrate and highlight 5 female influencers who I follow that I believe deserve recognition for their creative work and wonderful personalities.
Shu Lin - dejashu
Shu has been my most recent find and my absolute favourite creator at the moment. A few months ago I was missing London, so I searched up “London Travel Vlog” on YouTube and came across Shu’s channel where she was vlogging her experience living in London during a pandemic. Since then, I have done a deep dive into her channel that consists of travel, food, and lifestyle content. She’s a massive foodie and a lover of travel with her most recent videos consisting of taking her subscribers to different areas of England and showing them the best places to eat and sites to see while you’re there. Shu also recently worked with the BBC on a piece titled Instagram filters: 'You can't wear my skin for likes' where she explored how filters have changed from innocent cute dogs to face, eye, and skin colour transformations. She spoke about how these filters can be damaging to one's self-esteem but also raised a larger conversation about how filters can represent stereotypes in cultures and potential cultural appropriation.
Her videography, photography, and editing skills are incredible which makes for gorgeous content on both her YouTube channel and Instagram page! She's also just a lovely human and I believe more people should discover her work. If you’re craving travel of any kind and exploring food from all around the world, Shu’s channel is perfect for you!
Amelia - xameliax
I have been following Amelia for quite a few years and in those years, she has been very honest about her life including the many highs and the lows. For some reason, I remember the first video I ever watched on her YouTube channel which was recommended to me on the main page. She had just had her hair cut and was devastated by the end result (I've been there more times than I'd like to admit) as she treasured her long hair. Since then, I have periodically watched her channel, popping in every so often to see how she was doing. Over the years, Amelia has faced some hardships but she’s always been such a positive and caring individual. Recently, Amelia has explored women’s reproductive health, sharing personal stories, and openly encouraging positive discussions surrounding periods, PMS, and reviewing feminine hygiene products. While she isn’t a medical expert, her openness to share and generate positive conversations has educated her followers on the importance of transparency and respect on a topic that has long been considered taboo.
She’s also in the process of moving into a new house with her boyfriend and sweet dog Toby so if you love home renovations and moving vlogs, you should definitely check out Amelia’s channel!
Amanda Elimian - amandabb
I stumbled upon Amanda’s beauty commentary channel earlier this year one night when I couldn’t sleep. The first video I watched was her ranking One Direction’s albums from worst to best. I found myself nodding along to (most of) all the points she was making and couldn’t help but laugh at her explanations of why she was ranking their albums the way she was. From there I explored her older videos where she openly discussed drama in the beauty community, her criticism of The Sims and its creators, and of course, speaking about new beauty releases, giving honest reviews of products. Amanda’s disposition is honest and blunt. She tells it like it is and her honesty is so refreshing during a time where many influencers just sugarcoat things to get views. When there’s a scandal in the beauty community, I only look forward to Amanda’s videos as I know I’ll get the truth! She uploads a new video every week all the while studying to become a doctor so she’s pretty badass!
Jamie Paige - JamiePaigeBeauty
I’ve been following Jamie for a few years as I had been on the hunt for a Canadian influencer to support. She’s a beauty vlogger and makeup artist based in Montréal with such a wholesome feel to her. She’s open and honest with her supporters regarding products she’s liked, disliked, and recently, was open about the rhinoplasty surgery that she had at the end of the summer. While she didn’t owe anyone any explanation, she spoke candidly about her procedure, why she got it, and how she feels while recovering. In the past, I have found many individuals hide any cosmetic surgeries they have has but Jamie was transparent, shedding a positive light on cosmetic surgeries.
Jamie’s video style is not only calming but visually pleasing. She has always encouraged feedback from her followers and connects with many on her socials. She’s quickly become my favourite Canadian YouTuber.
Kristi - RawBeautyKristi

Kristi has been my favourite beauty YouTuber for many years. I first found her on Instagram, in a quick makeup tutorial/promo video for her YouTube channel. Since following Kristi, I look forward to her honest makeup reviews as she has shared in the past that she does not work with brands that she doesn’t actually like. She’s been candid about her weight loss journey and most importantly, her journey with infertility. Kristi first created her YouTube channel (before RawBeautyKristi) as a way of creating a community while she and her husband Zack tried to get pregnant. After many years of trying to conceive and many fertility appointments, Kristi stopped uploading on this channel and for the last 7 years, has uploaded on her beauty channel. After 15 years of trying to have a baby, in June of 2020, Kristi shared that she and Zack were expecting a baby in December. As someone who has been following Kristi for years, this was such an emotional video to watch but made me love Kristi more.
If you’re looking for someone who is honest about beauty products and doesn’t take themselves too seriously, then I would definitely recommend watching Kristi! She’s really a breath of fresh air.
While the people I have followed and subscribed to has changed a lot over the years, I have now found 5 female influencers that I not only look forward to the content they publish but also trust their opinions.
I hope you’re inspired to check out some of these influencers! And if you do check any of them out, send them some love and positivity, there's always room for more of that in the world!
xx Lex
